The whole scientific world organises special events for these so important dates and also the RANA foundation as well as CARAPAX have scheduled several activities. One of them is a special exihition on the evolution of Chelonians which will be realised in colaboration with other scientific institutions and chelonian conservation centres. Meanwhile at the end of the season 2008, before starting the season 2009 at the CARAPAX Centre a lot has been done in order to improve the naturalistic-scientific level of the work, already done since 20 years. Concerning the breeding of Chelonians and the veterinary assistance, the turtle keepers have got an extra training on European level. The tortoise keeper has got a 6 months intensive training at the tortoise Village of SOPTOM in France, while the terrapin and exotic keeper has got on spin CARAPAX an additional training by a great chelonian expert Hans Dieter Philippen. Finally the assistant keepr and veterinary assistant has got a week training at the CRARC of Barcelona (Spain), lead by the well known vet of the autonomous region of Cataluña, DVM Albert Martinez.
Moreover CARAPAX is going to rebuild the old wooden nursery for tortoise hatchlings, demolished last year, with a similar brand new aluminium structure with a capacity of 400 babies. The structure will be financed by a public appeal of our friends of the British Chelonia Group (see also the rubrique SPONSORS), the SIGS of Winterthur, in Switserland, and CARAPAX’ members. The inauguration is planned on CARAPAX’ Birthday on July 29th 2009. We hope that the Tuscan region is willing to partecipate too, as 80% of CARAPAX research -, breeding- and reintroduction efforts concern the Tuscan Testudo hermanni and Emys orbicularis. CARAPAX wishes a good season to all its European colleagues, members and friends in tuscany, in Italy, everywhere in Europe and in the whole World, that changed so much since Darwin and also in 2009! |
